It has been fifty-one weeks since Wimbledon 2010. In that period, Venus and Serena, the two greatest female tennis players of the last 11 years, have participated in a grand total of two tournaments. Two for Venus and zero for Serena (2010 U.S. Open and the 2011 Australian Open). But in what has most likely been one of the most joyous turn of events for the Eastbourne organizers in recent times, both superstars have come flying back to the WTA tour just in time for Wimbledon.

t all kicked off six weeks ago when the elder Williams' name appeared on the preliminary entry lists of the AEGON International. Many believed it to be some kind of hoax or a joke, but soon, undoubtedly between somersaults and backflips of joy, the Eastbourne organizers confirmed the news. Three weeks later, rumours swirled that Serena would be signing up for Eastbourne. Once again it sounded improbable, preposterous, however it proved to be true as she accepted a wildcard into her first event in almost a year.
Today, they both practiced at Devonshire Park for the second day. Venus for an hour with hitting partner David Whitt, before Serena took Whitts spot on the court. For years the pair have been criticized for their often error-strewn, awkward battles, but today the Eastbourne faithful simply watched in awe and glee as the sisters went toe to toe centimetres away from them.

In a way, it feels like they have both traveled back in time when they were young, innocent, and the underdogs. Having been such strong, divisive, and controversial figures for so long, there's a sense around the grounds of Devonshire Park that, in light of their advancing age and serious injuries, people want to see them back at the top of the game again. An example of this new found goodwill was during a break, a brave lady shouting loudly towards Venus, welcoming her to Eastbourne and pointing out that the last time she played in Eastbourne was back when she wore her trademark beads in her hair. The crowd chuckled loudly in unison.
